You have seen the beautiful white-sand beaches. You have probably already snorkeled with the Manta rays. But what if you want to see the real Lembongan?
We have one of the most unique things to do in Lembongan for you: go on a traditional fishing trip.
Long before the fast boats and the tourists arrived, Nusa Lembongan was a quiet island of fishermen and seaweed farmers. Understanding local life in Nusa Lembongan means understanding its deep connection to the sea. And there is no better way to understand it than to be part of it.
What is a Jukung?
If you have walked along the beach at sunrise, you have seen them lining the sand. They are the colorful wooden boats with long bamboo outriggers (that look like spider legs) on the sides.
These are called Jukung. They are the traditional fishing boats used all over Bali. They are narrow, steady in the waves, and painted in bright colors to honor the sea gods.
Your Morning on the Water
This is not a fancy, modern fishing charter with GPS fish finders and air-conditioned cabins. This is the real deal.
Here is what a morning with a local fisherman looks like:
1. The Early Start The ocean is calmest in the morning. You will head out early, often just before sunrise. Watching the sun come up from the ocean, with Mount Agung in the distance and the water turning from black to gold, is worth the wake-up call alone.
2. The Traditional Way Your captain—a local fisherman—will take you to his secret spots. You won’t be using heavy rods and reels. Instead, you will likely learn to fish with a traditional hand line. It requires patience and a gentle touch. It is harder than it looks, but it is incredibly rewarding when you feel that tug on the line!
3. The Catch Depending on the season and luck, you might catch Mackerel (Tenggiri), Snapper, or even a small Tuna. And the best part? If you catch something good, you can take it back to land. Many local warungs (cafes) will be happy to grill your fresh catch for your lunch with some sambal and rice.
Stories from the Sea
This experience is about more than just fishing. It is a chance to meet the locals.
Nusa Lembongan stories are best heard right from the source. Out on the water, in the quiet of the morning, you can chat with your boat captain (many speak good English!). You will learn about the currents, the changing seasons, and what life was like on the island before it became a famous holiday spot.
Gecko Tip: How to Book
You usually won’t find this experience sold at the big commercial tour desks. It is too small, too personal.
But we can help. The friendly team at Gecko Bungalows knows the local fishermen personally—they are our neighbors and friends.
If you want to try this authentic experience, just let us know at the front desk. We can arrange for a trusted local captain to pick you up for a morning adventure you will never forget.
